Many influential people have recently visited our region

GREG CHRISTENSEN Scenic Rim mayor

THIS year's Remembrance Day was, for me, a powerful reminder of the deep respect our community has for its history and particularly for those who sacrificed their tomorrow for our today.

Across the region, on the centenary of the Armistice that marked the end of World War I, we renewed our commitment to honour that sacrifice with the dedication of new memorials at Peak Crossing, Beaudesert and Canungra.

All our Remembrance Day events were strongly supported by the community and served as a call for each of us to aspire to the sterling values that earned such a proud and enduring reputation for Australia.

The value of mateship was celebrated recently at our International Men's Day Dinner at the Centre, Beaudesert, where we were joined by two inspirational speakers, Australian actor and author William McInnes and former Australian men's hockey team captain Mark Knowles.

William is perhaps best known for his role in the television series Blue Heelers but he has recently released a book on fatherhood, describing the happy as well as poignant moments that resonate with everyone.

With International Men's Day celebrating positive male role models, Mark was another excellent guest speaker, having led from behind as the standard-bearer at the Commonwealth Games’ opening ceremony, sharing the moment with his fellow athletes.

I am sure the insights both William and Mark shared will continue to encourage the development of the men of our region.

Many of you will have found interesting reading in the Future SEQ campaign championed by News Limited in conjunction with the Council of Mayors South East Queensland.

I'm encouraged that this series of print and online articles has brought a broader focus and understanding of the significant disparity in transport infrastructure and public transport access for large areas of South East Queensland, including our region.

I continue to advocate incessantly on behalf of the needs of the community and the importance of recognising the valuable contribution of our region's communities and to press for urgency to treat them with the same respect as their urban neighbours.

Recently, I welcomed the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Mark Bailey, on a tour in our region so he could see first-hand the competing needs of commuter traffic and freight transport on the Mount Lindesay Highway.

Road safety should be a particular focus for us all as we head into the Christmas-New Year 'silly season'.

Please take care when you are out and about and heed the warnings about the dangers of drink-driving and travelling at speed.

I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and health and prosperity in 2019.

My congratulations to our Scenic Rim Year 12 school leavers - I wish them every success as they embark on the next stage of life's journey.

In this final edition of the Scenic Rim Leader I would like to convey my thanks to Ashleigh Howarth who has so colourfully told our Scenic Rim story over the past year.
